The Legend of Bigfoot
You’ve heard the whispers, seen the blurry footage, and maybe even felt a chill run down your spine in the deep woods. Yeah, we’re talking about Bigfoot – the legendary creature that’s captured millions of imaginations worldwide. But what exactly is this beast, and why does it keep evading scientific proof? Let’s dive into the lore surrounding this elusive beast.
Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch, is a towering, hairy humanoid said to roam the wilderness, leaving behind tales of its existence from the Pacific Northwest to the far corners of the globe. Despite its widespread fame, Bigfoot remains a cryptid, a creature whose existence hasn’t been backed up by solid scientific evidence.
It’s described as standing anywhere from 7 to 14 feet tall, weighing up to 500 pounds, and covered in shaggy fur. Its face is a blend of ape-like features and human resemblance, adding to the mystique. Known for its bipedal walk and immense strength, encountering Bigfoot is often accompanied by a putrid stench, signaling its presence.
Bigfoot sightings are most commonly reported in wooded areas of the northwestern U.S. and western Canada, although variations of the creature exist in folklore worldwide. Indigenous myths often spoke of hairy, wild men inhabiting the forests long before Bigfoot became a pop culture phenomenon.
Encounters with Bigfoot are characterized by a sense of being watched, accompanied by an eerie stillness in the woods. Witnesses often report hearing howls, grunts, and the sound of rocks being thrown, adding to the spine-chilling nature of the experience. Some claim to have stumbled upon Bigfoot nests or even witnessed the creature vanish into thin air, fueling speculation about its origins.
The history of Bigfoot sightings dates back centuries, with Indigenous cultures and early settlers sharing stories of encounters with giant, hairy beings. In modern times, the term “Bigfoot” gained widespread recognition in 1958, following a series of reported footprints discovered in California’s Humboldt County. Since then, numerous sightings, photos, and videos have kept the Bigfoot legend alive.
Despite the lack of concrete proof, interest in Bigfoot persists, fueled by eyewitness accounts, tantalizing clues, and ongoing scientific exploration. Whether Bigfoot is a flesh-and-blood forest creature or a mysterious entity traversing dimensions, one thing’s for sure – the allure of this elusive cryptid continues to captivate the human imagination.
The Legendary Bigfoot
What is up, Bizarros?!!! Guess what day it is?
Hump day?
Nope.
Christmas?
Kind of.
This week, we are covering one of the most famous humanlike creatures—that’s right, we’re diving into the legendary hairy creature—Bigfoot!
What Is Bigfoot?
Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch, is a very large, hairy humanoid. Technically, he is classified as a cryptid, but we know he is more of a legend.
He is popularly known for dwelling in the Pacific Northwest, but he’s been seen across the country.
In other areas, he has different names – such as Skunk Ape, Honey Island Swamp Monster, Boggy Creek Monster, or Ohio Grassman.
What Is The Origin Of The Word Sasquatch?
Sasquatch comes from the Salish se’sxac, which means “wild men”.
What Does Bigfoot Look Like?
Bigfoot is incredibly tall, anywhere from 7 feet to 14 feet tall, weighing 450 to 500 lbs.
He is completely covered in shaggy fur and is known to have a face that is a mix between an ape and a human.
There are variations to his fur – sometimes, it is dark brown, lighter brown, and, in some reported cases, grey.
He walks and runs bipedal and is known to be incredibly strong and is a great climber.
They give off putrid scents, which is often a giveaway that one may be nearby. There is a reason they are known as Bigfoot.
One of the most popular ways that people document a Bigfoot encounter, besides shaky-ass 1996 home video footage, is by discovering giant footprints.
There have been some alleged Sasquatch footprints that have measured up to 24 inches long.
Where Is Bigfoot Known To Be?
Sasquatch is said to live in the northwestern United States and western Canada areas like British Columbia. The majority of Bigfoot sightings take place in woods and forested areas.
The legend of Bigfoot has roots in Indigenous myths and legends, but as we mentioned, variations of Bigfoot have spread across the nation.
Now, let’s talk about elements of a Bigfoot encounter. Essentially, what normally occurs when someone spots this infamous cryptid.
Elements Of A Bigfoot Encounter
Most sightings take place in the woods, whether individuals are hunting, camping, or hiking.
More often than not, before Bigfoot is seen, there are two major senses:
The feeling of being watched. Just that creepy feeling that something around you has it’s eyes on you and is following your every step.
A terrible stench that does not seem to have a discernible location.
Additionally, people say that the woods can become eerily quiet, meaning a lack of insect sounds or bird chirps. Just stillness.
There are noises and behaviors that are attributed to Bigfoot, such as:
-Howling
-Grunting
-Knocking on trees
-Throwing rocks, pebbles, or acorns
-Whistles
Some people think rock throwing is a territorial thing. It’s their way of communicating, “Hey, this is my area. Get your own neck of the woods.”
Bigfoot is very elusive, and it seems that they like to climb trees to avoid your gaze.
They may also peer around a tree at you, so you might catch that swift movement of seeing a head duck back behind a tree trunk. Which would be unsettling.
It’s been believed that Bigfoot creates nests. Sort of like tee-pee structures.
Apparently, in Washington State, a team of Sasquatch researchers called the Olympic Project stumbled upon a Bigfoot nest made of dead trees and foliage.
Finally, and I don’t know how true this is, but some folks say that Bigfoot will kill and eat deer and then hang their skeletons from trees.
That’s the ultimate no-trespassing sign there. Whether it’s Bigfoot or Wrong Turn 2, I’m not walking past a deer skeleton piñata.
History of Bigfoot Sightings:
Experts assert that most cultures have some type of account or example of humanoid creatures in their history.
While Bigfoot may be more believable than others when it comes to “giants”, it tends to be a bit of a common thread.
In many cases they are titled things such as the “wild man” or the “hairy man.”
For North America, many of the indigenous cultures include stories and tales of mysterious, shaggy hair covered entities that live in the forest.
These stories existed long before you read stories online about the infamous Bigfoot.
On the Tule River Indian Reservation, petroglyphs created by a tribe of Yokuts at Painted Rock depict Bigfoot-like creatures titled “The Family.”
Some of these petroglyphs are estimated to be about 1,000 years old.
According to the Tulare County Board of Education in 1975, “Big Foot, the Hairy Man, was a creature that was like a great big giant with long, shaggy hair.
His long, shaggy hair made him look like a big animal.
He was good in a way because he ate animals that might harm people.” Yokuts’ parents warned their children not to venture near the river at night, or they may encounter the creature.
Ape Canyon Incident
In July 1924, a story from The Oregonian gained national attention. It recounted a clash between gold prospectors and “ape-men” near Mount St. Helens.
The prospectors encountered these “ape-like men” near their cabin, with one of the men, Fred Beck, firing at one. Later, they were attacked by the creatures, who threw rocks at the cabin, injuring Beck.
The men were terrified and quickly fled the area.
What Is The Origin Of The “Bigfoot” Name?
In the year 1958, a bulldozer operator named Jerry Crew made a remarkable discovery in the Six Rivers National Forest of Humboldt County, California.
While working for a logging company, he stumbled upon a set of gigantic, 16-inch human-like footprints deeply imprinted in the mud.
Intrigued, Jerry informed his coworkers, and many shared tales of similar sightings on previous job sites, along with unexplained incidents like a 450-pound oil drum being mysteriously moved.
The logging crew soon coined the term “Bigfoot” to describe the apparent culprit behind these massive tracks.
Initially, Jerry and his colleagues thought someone might be playing a prank, but as more of these enormous footprints surfaced, he reached out to Andrew Genzoli, a reporter from the Humboldt Times newspaper.
Genzoli interviewed the lumber workers and wrote articles about the mysterious footprints, introducing the name “Bigfoot” in relation to the tracks and the local legends of large, hairy, wild men roaming the area.
A footprint cast was made, and Jerry made the front page of the newspaper on October 6, 1958, holding one of the casts.
The story quickly spread like wildfire, with Genzoli receiving inquiries from major media outlets such as the New York Times and Los Angeles Times.
Consequently, the term “Bigfoot” became a widespread reference to an apparently large, unknown creature leaving massive footprints in Northern California.
As a result, Willow Creek and Humboldt County are considered by some to be the “Bigfoot Capital of the World.”
Live Science Article
According to Live Science, there have been more than 10,000 reported eyewitness accounts of Bigfoot in the United States in the last 50 years.
The most famous Bigfoot video is a short film taken in 1967 by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin, known as the “Patterson–Gimlin film,” or “Patterson film.”
Shot in Bluff Creek, the video shows what appears to be a large and hairy bipedal ape, or Bigfoot, striding through a clearing.
The video’s authenticity is still debated as some boring people who always leave a party first and never bring snacks think it could potentially just be a guy in a gorilla suit.
The Second Live Science Article
In an interview with Live Science, one of the team members, Mireya Mayor, who is director of the Exploration and Science Communications Initiative in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Florida International University, stated that a yet-to-be-discovered primate hiding in the Oregon wilderness “is totally within the realm of possibility.”
In fact, back in 2001, Mayor discovered a new species of mouse lemur.
And while the mouse lemur is very tiny, she claims that a large primate could just as easily remain undetected by humans.
“We’ve seen that throughout history with other apes,” she said, adding, “When I went in search of western lowland gorillas, because of the dense vegetation that they live in, the fact that they’re not habituated and, in fact, avoid humans at all costs, there were times when we were no more than three feet away from a 450 lb silverback and didn’t know that it was there for a good hour or two.”
As for their expedition in the Oregon wilderness, the team captured on their thermal camera what appeared to be a large creature moving around in the woods.
While they don’t know for sure whether it was an actual Bigfoot, the video is quite compelling. Mayor described the creature as being “very big and moving in an apelike—if not bipedal—fashion.”
She went on to say that the footage was “probably the most compelling piece of evidence” that she had seen thus far. After showing the video to another primatologist, he was equally impressed and agreed with her that “something apelike was far from its home.”
Again, there is a LOT more information, beginnings, and legends; there are entire podcasts dedicated to the mythical monster.
Consider this a very brief 101 class on Bigfoot. But let’s continue with what Bigfoot could be and some encounters.
What Could Bigfoot Be?
Cryptid / Natural to Earth
The first theory is that Bigfoot is naturally from Earth, somewhere between man and ape, and has just evaded us outside of shrieks and shaky photographs for centuries.
People say that Bigfoot appears to have human characteristics, especially in its facial features.
They live up in trees or build dwellings but are constantly on the move, and they are exceptionally strong and fast.
One issue people have with this theory is the lack of bodies, and the answer to some is that they cannibalize their dead once they pass.
Ultra-dimensional / Alien -Mass Live
(Phrase from John Keel, parallel dimension)
Here are a few theories surrounding Bigfoot as an inter/ultra dimensional being.
Paranormal Researcher William Hall believes there are particular signs of entities that possess the ability to shift between dimensions – he lists ghosts, aliens, and Bigfoot as examples.
These signs include being able to seemingly disappear incredibly fast without any trail, being incredibly elusive and fast-moving, and being located in multiple areas.
Here is a quote:
“It used to be that the UFO people didn’t talk to the ghost people because they were a little weird, and nobody would talk to the Bigfoot people because they were crazy.
I found out we cannot continue to do that. In reality, quantum physics is leading us there.”
Renowned Bigfoot hunter Bill Brock suggested the idea of multi-dimensional portals. Brock referenced a recent NASA announcement that magnetic portals may be real.
Brock said he came to believe in them when he traveled to West Virginia to study the Mothman case.
In Bill Penning’s Bigfoot research, he discovered tracks of something large running bipedal chasing a deer.
However, once the bipedal entity’s footprints caught up to the deer, essentially catching, you would assume, both footprints completely vanish.
Penning is quoted as saying:
“The portals could be why we don’t see any bodies, why there are no bones.”
David McCullough, a member of Team Squatchachusetts, had a Bigfoot encounter in the woods involving orbs of bright lights.
The connection between spirits or aliens and Bigfoot seems to deepen with the sighting of orbs mixed with Sasquatch, so it’s theorized they could share similar abilities.
Jack Lapseritis, author of The Psychic Sasquatch, tells the story of a group of people who had an amazing encounter with a Bigfoot.
The story came from Mrs. Jeffery, whose story Jack summarizes as follows: “After returning from a long hike, the group was stunned when a nine-to-ten-foot Sasquatch stepped out in front of them a short distance away.
Then, in the twinkling of an eye, the Bigfoot completely disappeared in front of the witnesses!
The witnesses insisted that it literally dematerialized!
Mrs. Jeffrey reported that she was so awed at what she saw that when they returned home, she did not leave the house for two weeks.
The woman was in such a total state of shock that she did not return to the area for some time.”
So, just to reiterate:
No bodies
Seen everywhere (not native)
Ability to be completely elusive
Tracks lead to nowhere or stop mid-stride
Orbs of light that accompany some sightings
Bigfoot Sightings
1 – 2021 – BFRO.NET
On January 23rd, 2021, a potential Bigfoot sighting occurred on Highway 101 just south of Garberville, California.
A man named Rick Bates made the sighting between Benbow Inn and Richardson Grove.
In his report explaining his sighting, Mr. Bates wrote in part, “The road makes a few turns and the speed limit drops in the area. As I rounded a sweeping right hand turn I saw a figure on the south bound shoulder of the highway.
I was the only vehicle in the area at about 8:15 PM. My speed was about 45-50 MPH as I passed the figure.”
He went on to describe the creature, “The figure was laying on the shoulder of the road on its right side.
I estimated the height to be about 7’. I was looking at the creature’s back and noticed it had broad shoulders and was thick torso shape.
While the shape [was] similar to a human it was not human. It was not a bear either.
I could see muscular features in its glutes and a head on the shoulders that was somewhat tapered toward the top and being held off the ground.
Its hair was brown and very coarse. The hair was not fur like of a bear at all.”
The next thing he did was turn his car around and drove back to the site where he witnessed the creature but when he returned to the location (approximately two minutes after passing it the first time), the figure was completely gone.
He noted that he has spent a lot of time in the woods as an avid fisherman and hunter so he was very familiar with that area and had never before encountered anything like that creature.
Second Bigfoot Sighting
Reddit – 2022 – Niboium – sage
Back in December of last year, I spent a few days at my sister’s in rural Arkansas for the holidays.
On the 28th, I went for a nature hike and happened upon a quaint little glade on the edge of the Ouachita River where it was a particularly tranquil shade of blueish-green.
After immortalizing the scene by taking a video, I noticed that decently sized rocks were being moved around from the other side of the river that the water had carved out at least 100 feet away from me.
I don’t think I properly caught it on camera, but I wish I did. It was as if the rocks were being disrupted by an invisible person.
I took note of this strange experience before scaling the hill on my side of the river and venturing a little deeper into the woods.
It wasn’t long before I began to hear knocking from the area where I had seen the rocks being moved about, so I began recording once more.
The knocking went on for some time before I decided to move once more.
I happened upon a fallen tree laid between a small standing tree in a U-shape.
I’m not the most well-versed in cryptozoology, but I have heard of Sasquatch marking their territory through log arrangements not unlike what I was looking at.
Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen naturally or was propped up that way by a person, but it still stood out to me. For a while, the knocking was sparse, happening only at distant intervals, but much later, it became more frequent, and I even heard what sounded like tree trunks being snapped.
It was a loud, crunching noise that happened a few times over. After these crunches, however, the noises stopped outright, and after crouching down for a few more minutes to see if I could capture the source of these sounds on camera, I headed back out of the woods to my sister’s house.
I remember the walk back being a pretty mortifying experience, nothing frightening happened on my way out, but the paranoia of the thing causing the knocking and crunching showing up had me on edge till I reached the road at least.
Third Bigfoot Sighting
Reddit – 2023 – Big Fat Moderator
Well, basically, I was hiking Sourdough Mountain in the North Cascades; it’s a pretty grueling hike, like 13 miles and 6000ft of elevation gain.
I met a random couple at the trailhead, and we hiked together. Halfway up the mountain, at a small clearing, I heard a tree knock.
Then, there were two more tree knocks. I could not believe what I was hearing. It was like someone banging on a tree with a baseball bat.
If you’ve ever hiked an actual mountain, the notion that someone is OFF TRAIL, way deep in the timber, pranking someone by banging trees while you’re three hours up the side of a steep mountain is insane.
Anyway, nothing else happened, and we reached the peak at about 3:30 p.m. A few hikers came down the mountain, as we started pretty late in the morning, so we were the last ones on the mountain.
After enjoying the view, we start our way back down the switchbacks.
The couple was hiking quickly, so I fell behind. I was enjoying the views, the berries, and just the entire experience when the couple disappeared from view, and I was totally alone.
Now i know you’re supposed to make noise while hiking as there are tons of bears up there, so i was singing a little song to make noise, when all of a sudden i hear rustling and footsteps over my right shoulder.
It sounded like bipedal, but i KNEW there were no people behind me so it freaked me out a bit.
Then, the footsteps would mirror mine. I would stop, and the rustling would stop. I would start, and they would start again.
This really creeped me out, but I still had no idea what it was.
Then, the entire forest went totally silent. It was like a heavy blanket was over the atmosphere—no wind, no birds, no bugs, nothing. This was the creepiest moment I have ever experienced until shortly after, when suddenly, it felt like I was being watched.
It was such a strong feeling it was like 2 laser beams were burning into my head.
It felt like I was a prey animal, and some predator was about to attack me. Total instinctual fear.
I continued hiking and turning around to see what it was but saw nothing. I turned around a few times until I reached a small clearing in the trees and turned and looked, and there it was.
It was sitting about 80 yards away up the mountain. It was sitting or standing; I’m not exactly sure because the bottom half was covered by leaves and bushes, but there it was—a giant hairy man/gorilla-looking creature.
It was dark brown and had long hair all over it. It didn’t look like fur; it looked like hair. It had MASSIVE shoulders. It looked like an old-school football player with pads on. It didn’t have a neck.
The head looked like it was right on the shoulders. It had a slight conical shape. There were huge eye sockets and a brow ridge.
Huge dark eyes. Couldn’t see any whites but it was 80 yards away and i was just in shock.
I couldn’t believe it was real. I was in shock and awe as I stared at this thing. When I looked into its eyes, it was like I had total tunnel vision, and it was hypnotizing. It felt like I was in a trance as I stared at it.
I said under my breath, “holy shit,” and did a small nervous laugh. That’s when it moved its arms.
It was so massive, and when it moved, I snapped out of my trance. My logical brain took over, and the most intense fear/dread washed over me.
it felt like i was about to die or get eaten, i just turned quickly and continued hiking down the mountain.
I just turned away and left. And I didn’t hear anything after that.
I ran down the mountain so fast that what was supposed to take two and a half to three hours took me an hour and a half.
I didn’t stop running until I got to my car.
Fourth Bigfoot Sighting
Garth Dylan – Reddit – 1986
“The fall of 1986, it was mid-October, and I was 26 yrs in Northeastern Ohio, on the county line road between Lake and Ashtabula counties.
The time was approximately 3am, I was on a Honda 650cc motorcycle going home after bartending at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
About 100 yards ahead of me, I clearly saw a tall, broad, hairy, upright ‘man-like’ creature cross the road from east to west.
I slowed down as I approached the area, which was heavily wooded and extremely overgrown.
There were deep ditches on each side of the road. I was in 2nd gear going about 25 mph as I passed the spot, when I saw the creature standing in the ditch looking directly at me, we were only about 6’ apart.
Its face was a combination of ape-like and Neanderthal and very human-like.
It had a heavy brow ridge over dark eyes, a wide flat nose and a very wide mouth and square teeth. It was ‘smiling’ at me.
Which scared the living shit out of me, and I gunned the bike, looking away and concentrating on controlling the bike.
I looked back a couple of seconds later, and the creature was running after me, still ‘smiling’.
I drove as fast as I could for the next couple of miles, feeling that it was still behind me, but I never looked.
Unfortunately, I only lived about 5 miles from that spot, even less as the crow flies.
My family owned 175 acres of mixed farmland forested space north of the Grand River.
It should not be hard to pinpoint exactly where my encounter was. I no longer have any attachments to the area, and it has since been built upon. I only wonder if the creature is still up there.
The encounter changed my life. I didn’t ride my motorcycle around there anymore, I avoided that road for almost a year.
I began carrying a .357 magnum around when I was outside the house and working outside. I never camped out again till after I had moved to another state.”
Fifth Bigfoot Sighting
Phantoms and Monsters – 2024
On this trip, I decided to hike an old Indian trail that followed the ridge tops from Saddle Blanket Mountain to Oakridge in Oregon, one of the Native American’s favorite summer camps and trading centers.
It was a beautiful August day, two days into the hike (I expected to be gone about two weeks), when literally out of the blue the most terrifying thing that ever happened to me in my life occurred.
It would change my perspective of reality forever.
I was walking along the trail, enjoying the strong breeze and bright sunshine, when, in the middle of a step, everything around me started to turn gray and blurry.
The only way I can describe it was as if suddenly I was looking through someone else’s prescription sunglasses. I finished the step and started another.
Every inch I moved forward the darkness increased and the gray blurring turned into a jumble of shapes that made no sense.
I then seemed to pass a barrier and everything started to return back into focus when my foot reached the ground on the second step everything around me had changed.
Day had turned into night, and there was no wind. All the Douglas Fir and pine trees had been replaced with thick jungle-like growth.
The cool thin mountain air was replaced with humid thick air. There were no stars in the sky, but there was a diffused light that let me see everything clearly, however, I couldn’t tell what the light source was.
As often happens when the human body receives a massive dose of adrenaline, the entire incident appeared like it was in slow motion, and even though I was only there for a second or two, I had time to observe my surroundings.
The silence was broken by continuous high-pitched screaming sound, and I was nearly overwhelmed with a sense of fear and danger.
My momentum caused me to take one more step before stopping in my tracks.
It was at this point I heard a whispered voice over my right shoulder. I couldn’t tell if I heard it with my ears or inside my head.
The voice wasn’t directed at me but something said the word quietly to itself. I was so terrified I actually felt my heart stop for a moment.
That whispered word is what saved me. I opened my mouth and gasped in a huge gush of thick air and recoiled backward in the same footsteps I had entered wherever I was.
As I threw myself backward, I looked over my right shoulder.
A dark-colored hairy right hand and arm were reaching for my throat over my shoulder. The hand had pale ivory spade-shaped fingernails. The nails looked clean and almost had a manicured look to them.
The thumb was placed lower (towards the wrist) on the hand than a human’s.
Both hands and arms were thin and powerful looking, and both were covered with thick, coarse black hair.
I got a good look at it because the thumbnail grazed my neck (it did not break the skin) as I moved backward.
As I continued backward, the hand clutched where my neck had been a split second before, and it seemed to fade off into the distance as I returned through the portal.
I took two more steps backward, and everything reversed itself from what had just happened. The world around me became lighter, the fir and pines gradually came back into view, and by the third step, I was back on Saddle Blanket Mountain.
I continued to move backward in terror, and as I did, I observed that where I had just come from was a shimmering oval patch of air about the size of a large door.
The woods behind it looked like it was underwater.
By the fifth backward step, the shimmering area seemed to just evaporate, and everything was back to normal.
By then, my lungs had nearly burst from the volume of air I had inhaled during the huge gasp I had just taken.
My body felt like it was on fire from the adrenaline surge. I spun around and ran back down the trail as fast as my legs could carry me, and didn’t stop until I reached my truck.
It took nearly two days to get to that place and about three hours to get back.
On my way home I was absolutely horrified at the thought of what would happen if I were to drive my truck into something like that. It had been a trap pure and simple.
Whatever it was that tried to kill me somehow kept the portal hidden from me on the way in, and I didn’t actually see it until I was back out again.
I had terrible nightmares for years and still haven’t come to grips with what happened. My fingers are trembling and the hair is standing up on the nape of my neck as I write this.
