No, this isn’t a game of thrones episode. This is the real-life story of Princess Diana and the events surrounding her death. Except for the dragons.
On August 31st, 1997, Princess Diana was in a tragic car accident in Paris’s Pont de l’Alma tunnel. The accident claimed the lives of her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, driver Henri Paul, who were pronounced dead at the scene, while Princess Diana succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash later in the hospital. The lone survivor from the accident was Fayed’s bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones.
The car was allegedly fleeing from paparazzi at a high speed, twice the posted speed limit of 31mph, and struck a pole in the tunnel. Over 2.5 billion watched Princess Diana’s funeral. The entire world felt the void of losing such a light in the world.
Was the loss of one of the world’s most loved people so tragic that the people weren’t able to process it and created theories to cope with a senseless loss? Or was there a nefarious plot to remove Princess Diana from the royal family permanently?
Conspiracy Theories
Mohamed Al-Fayed, father of Diana’s boyfriend Dodi Fayed, has leveled 175 theories as to why his son is dead.
Mohamed believes that the crash was orchestrated by MI6 carrying out orders of the Royal Family. The French investigated Mohamed’s claims but ultimately said the cause of the crash was due to Paul’s operation of the vehicle while drunk and on prescription medication. They also levied blame against the paparazzi drivers stating they were at fault as well.
However, this is only one theory, and it doesn’t account for several troubling circumstances surrounding the accident.
Richard Tomlinson, a former MI6 officer, claims that they were involved with Diana’s death. He stated that in 1992 he saw similar plans laid out by MI6 to assassinate Serbians President at the time. He also claimed that Henri Paul was an MI6 agent, and one of her bodyguards was a contact for them as well.
However, Tomlinson walked back his remarks in 2008 that he couldn’t remember the specifics after 16-17 years.
Diane’s Pregnancy & Engagement
Was Diane murdered to prevent the mother of a future king from being married to a non-Christian?
Many have postulated that Diane was pregnant with Dodi’s child and was set to be engaged. Allegedly the Royal Family wasn’t happy that there would be a non-Christian in the Royal family.
However, Diana wasn’t pregnant, and sources stated that her relationship with Dodi wouldn’t last much longer.
Absence of CCTV Footage
Many cite the fact that there is no CCTV footage from the route that the Mercedes Benz took from the hotel to the tunnel.
Of the cameras located along the route, many of them were private security cameras operated by local businesses and were pointed at the entrances of their business.
There was a traffic camera that had been shut down at 11 pm, and there was no one monitoring the camera at the time the Benz was making its ultimate trip.
While it seems odd that there is no camera footage for a major city in the late 20th century, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
